How are Sperm Tests Performed?

A sperm test (also known as a semen analysis test or spermogram) is a simple, non-invasive fertility test for men. It measures the volume and quality of a patient’s sperm along with other important factors that contribute towards conception.

If you and your partner have been trying to get pregnant and have experienced difficulties in doing so, a sperm test should be one of the first checks you consider making. The process is simple and you can have the results within a couple of days of supplying your sample.

At the Male Fertility Clinic we have performed thousands of semen analyses for patients across Central London and we know that many men are worried about taking such a test. That is why we have put together this article – to help explain the process and what you can expect from it.

Booking an appointment

First things first – you need to book an appointment with The Male Fertility Clinic. Simply book online to arrange a time and date that is suitable for you, and our friendly staff will contact you with an email containing useful information.

Preparing to give your sample

To get an accurate sperm count, there are certain things you need to avoid in the days leading up to your appointment. Key among these is; you should avoid ejaculating for between 2 and 7 days before the test – either through masturbation or intercourse. Abstaining for longer than 7 days can lead to a build up of dead cells, and therefore an inaccurate result. You should also avoid drinking alcohol prior to the appointment as this can affect your sperm. Other drugs that can affect semen analysis results are testosterone supplements, anabolic steroids, marijuana, and opiates. If you are habitually using any of these drugs, please tell us. We don’t judge, but usage can often affect your sperm count.

Producing your sample

You have two choices when producing a sperm sample – you can do so at home or at The Male Fertility Clinic itself.

At home: we will send you a sample collection pack through the post. The sample container will be sealed and should remain so until you’re ready to produce your sample. You should do this by masturbating into the container and sealing it securely. You must then bring your sample to the clinic within an hour of producing it, being sure to keep it warm.

If you are unable to produce a sample by masturbation due to religious reasons or personal preference, we can provide you with a non-lubricated condom to collect your sample during intercourse instead. It is important that you don't use spermicides or lubricants whilst producing the sample as these can be toxic to sperm. Again, this sample must be taken to the clinic within an hour of being produced.

Upon arriving at the clinic, you will hand over your sample to our Andrologist, who will be performing the semen analysis. Unless you have further questions, you can leave and await your results.

On-site: when you arrive at the Male Fertility Clinic, we will provide you with a sterile sample container, along with a short questionnaire. When you’re ready, you can go to our private room and produce your sample into the pot. The room is thoroughly cleaned after each visit and includes WiFi and facilities for washing your hands. You can leave the sample in the room for collection by our Andrologist.

Semen analysis and results

Your results will be ready within two working days of your appointment and a copy will be emailed directly to you. If you have any further questions at this point, feel free to email the clinic for a call back.
