How Much Semen is Needed for a Sperm Test?
One of the questions that we are regularly asked is how much semen is required for a successful male fertility test. Well, the answer may be surprising but there isn't a minimum required quantity. The amount of semen produced is one of the factors we check for as part of the male fertility test - Volume.
Why is volume important?
We don’t need much of a semen sample to be able to make an analysis. The average sample size is usually around 2-6ml after 2-7 days of sexual abstinence, which isn’t very much but it contains more than enough for us to conduct the appropriate tests.
The volume of semen you produce only becomes a matter of concern if it is less than 1.5ml as this can be indicative of a problem with your reproductive system, most commonly your prostate or seminal vesicles, either of which could impact on your ability to reproduce.
Providing a sample
Whether you provide your sample at the clinic or at home, you will be expected to deposit your semen into a sterile container that will be returned to the clinic for analysis by our team of medical professionals.
Preparing for your sample
You are advised to abstain from any sexual activity (including masturbation) in the days leading up to producing your sperm sample. The volume of semen at 2-7 days of sexual abstinence provides the most accurate results.
Frequent sexual activity involves the regular production of semen and sperm. As it takes around 24-36 hours for new sperm to be created in the body, the volume of both sperm and semen may be lower when tested during this time.
At the other end of the scale, sperm can remain in the testes for 15 to 25 days before being reabsorbed into the body. The closer it gets to that period, the more the sperm quality is degraded and the higher the likelihood of a sample that contains sperms that are an abnormal shape, have low mobility, and are low in count.
By going without sexual activity for a few days, more semen is likely to be produced for your sample and the fresh sperm contained within it should have a higher motility.
