How Do I Prepare for a Sperm Test?

Once you have booked an appointment for a sperm test, you will need to produce the sample and this requires a little preparation. A semen analysis is looking for several key factors in your sample, from the concentration, shape (morphology), and motility of your sperm, to the pH of your seminal fluid and possible anti-sperm antibodies.

In order to achieve accurate results from your sperm test, it is important that your prepare adequately in the days leading up to your analysis. In this article, we will discuss some of the precautions you should expect you to take:

Sexual activity

To get a reliable sample, you will need to refrain from all sexual activity for between 2 and 7 days prior to providing your sample. This includes both intercourse and masturbation.

Lifestyle

You should limit certain lifestyle factors that can impact sperm quality. These include alcohol, caffeine, and certain medications. Again, you should limit your intake of these for the 3-5 days before your test.

Hygiene

Prior to producing your sample, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly to prevent any possible risk of contamination. Avoid the use of lubricants, as these can harm the sperm cells.

Producing your sample

You will be expected to produce your semen sample into a sterile container, provided by the fertility clinic specifically for the test. The pot will need to be labelled with your name and date of birth.

Presenting your sample

If you produce your sample at the clinic, a member of staff will collect it from you for analysis. If you produce it at home, you have an hour to get it safely to the clinic. Within that hour, you must keep the sample warm, as the sperm movement will begin to decline if not kept at body temperature.
